When getting a public record actually takes knowing which agency holds it, how to word a request that survives exemptions, what's already been released, and how to escalate when the statutory deadline passes in silence, most requests die of the wrong agency, the wrong wording, or no reply — and with that expertise concentrated in a few national newsrooms, local journalists, researchers, and citizens give up while the records stay effectively secret.

What to build
Build an AI-powered solution that pries public records out of institutions that would rather not hand them over.
MuckRock and WhatDoTheyKnow already file and host requests — the open layer is the intelligence to win them. The gap is adversarial research against the government's own rulebook: which agency truly holds the file, wording that survives exemptions, the same record already released elsewhere, and the appeal precedent that beats a refusal.
How to build

Day 1
Pick the smallest experience that helps someone pry public records out of institutions that would rather not hand them over. The goal is to make one of those experiences work well, not to solve every part of the problem at once.
Pick your angle
Day 2
Choose the simplest format that fits the experience and audience. Build only what you need to test whether the idea works, people can use it, or the system can deliver.
